Matchday 3 in this year's Champions League campaign will be one to forget for all Frankfurt fans: the guests from Liverpool dominated the German side in a cruel 5-1 victory.
Ironically, the evening started extremly well for Frankfurt, who took the lead thanks to rightback Kristensen. After that however, it was pretty much all Liverpool: goal after goal for the Reds secured them a much needed win after some difficult games in the league.
Frankfurt have sadly shown tonight, that they are yet to be on the same level as Europe's giants in this competition - the goals they conceded were “too easy” and in parts very unnecessary.
Florian Wirtz however, will be happy with his perfromance tonight: maybe this was the game to finally “set him free” at his new club!
Here is a more detailed match report for Frankfurt's 5-1 loss against Liverpool:
Eintracht Frankfurt started brightly against Liverpool, with Bahoya creating the opening chance of the match. Alexander Isak tested returning goalkeeper Michael Zetterer twice soon after, but the Frankfurt shot-stopper saved both efforts. Despite these early scares, Liverpool gradually took control of the game.
Liverpool suffered an early setback as ex-Leverkusen player Jeremie Frimpong was forced off with injury. And then it got worse:
A moment of misjudgment from Florian Wirtz in Frankfurt’s half allowed the home side to launch a lightning counterattack. Right-back Kristensen finished the move with precision, hitting the inside post and scoring a goal that sent Frankfurt fans into raptures.
Liverpool responded before the half-hour mark: Hugo Ekitiké, ironically a former Frankfurt player, capitalized on a swift counterattack, running clean through on Zetterer to restore parity in the 34th minute. Moments later, a Liverpool corner found captain Virgil van Dijk, who powered the ball into the net to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
Frankfurt’s struggles continued right up to halftime. Another corner, this time met by Ibrahima Konaté, saw Liverpool extend their advantage to 3-1. Despite showing promise early, Frankfurt’s costly errors allowed Liverpool to turn the match around before the break.
After conceding two easy corner goals in the first half, Frankfurt continued to show in the second half that this stage might just be a bit too big for them at this moment in time.
Liverpool were able to start attack after attack with close to no counter attacks from Frankfurt - and in the 66th minute, Liverpool finished the game off thanks to Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo. The latter scored after a clean pass from Wirtz, who officially got his first scorer for his new side. 4-1 to Liverpool.
Unfortunately for the German side, the evening was not over just yet: just three minutes later it was ex-Leipzig star Dominik Szoboszlai, who scored from outside the box to make it 5-1.
Liverpool continued in order to get a sixth goal in, but it wasn't to be for them. Frankfurt on the other hand were relieved when they hear the final whistle - the nightmare evening was over.
Frankfurt lose 5-1 at home to Liverpool.
