The defender will now have to wait until next summer to make the move to Anfield, and the decision opens the door for others to make a January bid

Liverpool will not try to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi when the January transfer window opens.

A £35million Deadline Day move for Guehi collapsed at the eleventh hour when Palace pulled out of negotiations after failing to sign a replacement.

It prompted suggestions that Liverpool will revisit their interest in Guehi in January, when the player will have entered the final six months of his Palace contract and, therefore, be available for a cut-price fee.

However, it is understood that Liverpool will instead wait until Guehi is available on a free transfer next summer, once his contract expires on June 30, 2026.

Guehi, who had completed a medical ahead of the proposed move to the Premier League champions, was left angry at not being able to finalise a move to Anfield.

The centre-back will now have to wait to complete the switch, which would see him remain at Selhurst Park until the end of this season unless another interested club convinces Guehi to move elsewhere in January.

Liverpool’s stance will come as a welcome boost to Palace manager Oliver Glasner, who was insistent that Guehi must not be sold without first signing an adequate replacement.

Palace had been set to sign centre-back Igor Julio on loan from rivals Brighton, but the deal was cancelled after issues with the player’s medical.

Guehi came off with a groin injury during England’s 2-0 win over Andorra on Saturday, but trained with the group as normal on Monday ahead of Tuesday’s game away at Serbia.
