Defensive injury crisis deepened after midweek victory

Arne Slot’s right-back injury crisis got even worse in midweek as Liverpool lost Wataru Endo for what seems to be the long term.

The Japanese midfielder, who was playing at full-back against Sunderland on Wednesday, was stretched off in the Reds’ 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light.

He was already deputising in that position for the suspended Dominik Szoboszlai, who was controversially sent off in the late defeat by Manchester City last weekend, while natural right-backs Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong are also on the treatment table, with the former ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

“His injury doesn’t look good,” the Liverpool boss said. “I expect him to be out, unfortunately, for quite a long time again.”

The helpful thing for Slot is that Szoboszlai’s suspension was just for one match - and in the Premier League - and the Hungarian is in line to return here against Brighton.

Joe Gomez was also amongst the substitutes on Wearside, and he returned from his own injury problem to replace Endo on 69 minutes.

Gomez’s return could also mean a rest for either Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konate at Anfield, with the pair having played a lot of minutes as Liverpool’s only two fit senior centre-backs in the Englishman’s absence.

At left-back, Andy Robertson played ahead of Milos Kerkez against Sunderland, and it remains to be seen who will get the nod this weekend.

In the engine room, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch were the double pivot, although one could drop out in favour of Curtis Jones.

Florian Wirtz was in the No10 position at Sunderland, but he could be rested should Slot want to give Federico Chiesa a start.

Cody Gakpo could move up front in that case to hand Hugo Ekitike a rest, with the forward now the Reds’ only recognised striker after Alexander Isak’s broken leg.

Mohamed Salah could also be given a rest for teenager Rio Ngumoha, although after Slot’s side lost ground in the race for the Champions League last weekend, their focus could turn to hauling trophies rather than league position.

Predicted Liverpool XI (4-2-3-1): Mamardashvili; Szoboszlai, Gomez, van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Jones; Salah, Wirtz, Chiesa; Gakpo

Injured: Endo, Isak, Leoni, Frimpong, Bradley
