Luke O’Nien has hailed Simon Moore’s impact after Sunderland exercised a one-year option on the 36-year-old goalkeeper.
According to Sunderland Echo, the extension keeps the former Coventry City, Sheffield United and Cardiff City player at the Stadium of Light as the Black Cats gear up for a Premier League and European campaign next season.
O’Nien said squad members can contribute whether they play or not, highlighting Moore as a vital presence who sets standards, connects the group and drives culture despite not featuring this season. He keeps Moore’s shirt in his locker as a reminder to emulate those qualities.
Moore made a handful of appearances for Sunderland last season and has offered experienced cover in a department that also included Robin Roefs, Melker Ellborg and Anthony Patterson. His influence has been judged by more than minutes on the pitch in a young group that has developed quickly.
Reflecting on Europa League qualification against Chelsea on the final day at the Stadium of Light, O’Nien added, "Honestly, he's so good." He said Moore had sent him a photo marking the anniversary of their celebrations, noting the many selfies from that night.
