Manchester City have reached an agreement in principle to extend the contract of centre-back Ruben Dias, securing the Portugal international beyond his current deal which expires in 2027.
That's according to Athletic journalist David Ornstein who confirmed the story on Monday afternoon.
The 28-year-old has been a key figure in City’s recent dominance since joining the club from Benfica in 2020 for an initial fee of £62 million.
During his time at the Etihad, Dias has played a pivotal role in the team’s success, helping City to win the Premier League title in each of his first four full seasons, as well as major trophies including the Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
After an impressive debut season, Dias was quickly recognised as a leader, being voted into the squad’s captaincy group in 2021 and signing a one-year extension that tied him to the club until 2027.
Last season, Dias featured 44 times across all competitions and has accumulated a total of 222 first-team appearances for City, scoring four goals.
The new contract for Dias comes shortly after teammate Erling Haaland agreed to a long-term deal of nine and a half years in January. Meanwhile, manager Pep Guardiola also signed a new two-year contract in November 2024, committing to the club until 2027.
City have been active in the current transfer window, adding six new players to Guardiola’s squad, including Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Sverre Nypan, and goalkeepers James Trafford and Marcus Bettinelli.
This contract extension reinforces City’s commitment to maintaining a strong core of experienced players as they aim to continue their domestic and European success in the coming years.
