Manchester City boss Andree Jeglertz is optimistic about handing a debut to January signing Sam Coffey when his team take on London City Lionesses.
Man City will be looking to bounce back after bowing out of the Subway League Cup, thanks to a semi-final defeat at the hands of Chelsea. As they return to the Women’s Super League, they have a chance to cement their lead at the top of the table in London.
Currently six points above Chelsea in second, they travel to the CopperJax Community Stadium to face seventh-placed London City, who are winless in their last three league games.
City have not dropped points since the opening game of the season, and have boosted their already impressive squad with the signing of Sam Coffey from NWSL side Portland Thorns. The 27-year-old joined on a three-and-a-half-year deal, reported by ESPN to be worth £650,000.
Now, the American could make her debut for Man City, as Jeglertz confirmed she trained on Friday.
“She will be part of training tomorrow so hopefully she will be able to travel tomorrow,” the City boss explained.
Although the City boss did not reveal any new injuries to his squad following their game in midweek, the London fixture will be their third in seven days, so the addition of a midfielder as experienced as Coffey, along with the depth on their bench will be “crucial” to maintaining their positive results.
“With three games this week some players might struggle to last 90 minutes and the ones coming in can have a great impact on the game,” said the head coach. “We’ve seen it so many times this year, that the player that’s coming on has given an extra gear to the team.”
