Manchester United host Burnley on Saturday under immense pressure, reeling from one of the most embarrassing results in their recent history.
Rúben Amorim’s side are still searching for their first Premier League win of the season and now must respond to a humiliating Carabao Cup exit at the hands of League Two Grimsby Town in midweek.
In stark contrast, newly-promoted Burnley arrive at Old Trafford full of confidence. Scott Parker’s side are on a small unbeaten run after securing their first league victory last weekend and also progressing in the cup. This fixture represents a potential early-season trap for the struggling hosts.
Rúben Amorim must pick his players up from the humiliating Carabao Cup exit. He is expected to recall senior figures Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro after rotating his squad.
Benjamin Šeško struggled in his first start in that cup tie and may drop to the bench. The team remains without Lisandro Martínez, while Noussair Mazraoui is a major doubt.
Scott Parker’s Burnley are in a positive mood after progressing in the cup. He is expected to name a side similar to the one that beat Sunderland last weekend, with Lyle Foster leading the line.
However, the manager is still contending with a number of defensive injuries, with Jordan Beyer and Connor Roberts among those sidelined.
United are winless in the Premier League, and their season hit a new low in midweek with a calamitous penalty shootout defeat to League Two Grimsby Town.
After what has been described as one of the most embarrassing nights in the club’s history, the pressure on Rúben Amorim is now intense.
The Clarets are on a two-match unbeaten run in all competitions after a league win over Sunderland and a cup victory.
They have found their scoring touch and will sense a major opportunity for an upset at Old Trafford.
Manchester United predicted XI: Onana; Yoro, Dalot, Maguire, Shaw; Casemiro, Mount; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Cunha; Zirkzee.
Burnley predicted XI: Dubravka; Walker, Ekdal, Estève, Hartman; Bruun Larsen, Cullen, Ugochukwu, Anthony; Mejbiri; Foster.
Due to the 3pm Saturday blackout, the match will not be shown live on UK television. Highlights will be available on BBC’s Match of the Day.
