While Julian Alvarez continues to be the top topic in the news surrounding FC Barcelona, there have been some other interesting rumors and reports regarding the Catalan club as well. A recent report suggested that the Blaugranes are fully committed to landing the Argentine forward, and would try their best to achieve this objective this summer.
Still, this has not stopped them from being linked with some other high-profile names, and one of the most prominent of these names is the English forward Harry Kane. The Bayern Munich forward is seemingly set to sign a renewal with the Bavarian side, but the entry of Barcelona on the scene can change his plans going forward.
Meanwhile, these links with the Catalan side are also generating some excitement in England. The former Manchester United defender Gary Neville was clear in a recent media appearance that such a move would benefit both the Blaugranes and the player himself.
In this same program for ESPN, there was another English commentator, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward Michael Owen, and as SPORT has noted, he also talked about this potential move.
Although he did not mention Barcelona directly, Owen was clear that Bundesliga is not the right competition for a player of Kane’s stature, and backed him to move to stronger competition:
“My only complaint about Harry is his move to Bayern Munich. I understand the advantages, and I hope England benefits from them in the coming weeks. But as far as his career is concerned, he deserves more than the Bundesliga.”
“I watch the Bundesliga more now because of Harry, and apart from Bayern, it’s pretty ordinary. Week after week he plays in a team that dominates possession, controls territory, and creates chance after chance. Of course he scores goals.
Winning Bundesliga titles with Bayern was never going to define his greatness because Bayern almost always win their domestic league. If Bayern had won the Champions League, perhaps we’d see it differently, but they haven’t, and right now Kane needs something more in his career.”
Although his reasoning was different, Michael Owen’s final analysis is similar to that of Neville, i.e., Harry Kane should take the next step in his career and join Barcelona. La Liga would definitely be a bigger challenge for the Englishman, and he would not get any better chance to play for the Catalan side, as they are looking for a center-forward, and Harry Kane ticks all the boxes.
For now, it remains to be seen how this story would develop, as Bayern Munich are not expected to let their star striker leave easily, and Barcelona are also expected to remain focused on Julian Alvarez as their primary target.
