Newcastle United enter the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, with the holders facing growing pressure as they host Bradford City at St. James’ Park.
After winning the trophy last season, another long cup run is the ambition. The more urgent need, however, is for a victory to halt a damaging run of just one win in six games.
Facing the in-form leaders of League One represents a potential banana skin for the Magpies. Eddie Howe will know that a likely rotated side must deliver a clinical and professional performance to avoid a potential cup upset against a confident Bradford team.
Eddie Howe is expected to rotate his squad for the visit of Bradford, though his options are limited by injuries to Fabian Schär, Jacob Ramsey, and Yoane Wissa.
Aaron Ramsdale is set to deputise in goal, while the likes of Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, and Malick Thiaw could form a new-look defence alongside the experienced Kieran Trippier.
Howe may opt for a strong midfield trio of Joe Willock, Bruno Guimarães, and Joelinton to control the game. In attack, William Osula could be given the chance to lead the line, supported by Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga.
Newcastle United predicted XI: Ramsdale; Krafth, Lascelles, Thiaw, Trippier; Willock, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Barnes, Elanga, Osula.
The Carabao Cup fixture will be played at St. James’ Park on Wednesday, 24 September 2025, with kick-off scheduled for 7:45 pm BST.
The match will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Football in the UK. Coverage begins at 7:30 pm BST.
