Patience, courage, Francesco: Dunst's comeback and debut

When José Barcala and his coaching team nodded briefly from the sidelines and waved Barbara Dunst over, the floodlights above the Max-Morlock-Stadion seemed to shine brighter for a moment. More than 7,000 spectators watched as the Austrian quickly pulled on her jersey, tied her boots and ran almost impatiently towards the pitch. She almost forgot to introduce herself to the fourth official. At that moment, she couldn't wipe the smile off her face.

336 days of patience

Dunst made her comeback from injury and also her debut for Bayern in Tuesday’s game against Nürnberg.

It had been 336 days between that moment and the one that changed everything. On 3 December 2024, during Austria's 1-0 defeat to Poland in Euro qualifiers, Dunst's season came to an abrupt end. The 27-year-old injured her right knee in a tackle in midfield. Shortly afterwards, the dreaded diagnosis was confirmed: cruciate ligament rupture. It was the first serious injury of her hitherto flawless and successful career. The upcoming season, the second half of the season at Eintracht Frankfurt and the Euros in the summer all seemed a long way off.

Gratitude instead of burden

For Dunst, a year of patience, rehabilitation and learning began. But on this evening in Nuremberg, all that seemed forgotten. For the first time since her injury, she stepped back onto the pitch and pulled on the FC Bayern Women's jersey. The substitutes' bench jumped up at that moment, and the coach, teammates and support staff applauded. Dunsti, as she is affectionately known by everyone, beamed with joy. It was an expression of relief, pride and gratitude that she had accumulated over the long months.

Barbara Dunst finally got to pull on her No.28 shirt for Bayern.

“I think everyone who’s been close to me over the last few months knows that I accepted the injury from the very first second,” she said later. “I never saw it as a setback, but as an opportunity to regroup. And I’m grateful to everyone who’s supported me. They’ve always seen me as a person, not just ‘football Dunsti’. That will remain forever. That's what makes this comeback so special.”

For months, there was not a single day that Dunst found burdensome. “I enjoyed it. I never had to drag myself to therapy. I had great therapists and carers.” She spoke of joy, not duty, and that makes her particularly human. But she also expressed special gratitude to those around her, saying, “My friends were heroes. I really have to say a big thank you to everyone around me who supported me throughout.”

Pernille Harder was just as delighted for her teammate.

And then there was the coach, who nodded, spoke and yet expressed everything that can be said in words: appreciation, pride and joy. “I’m very happy for Barbara,” said Barcala after the 6-0 victory. “She has worked very hard. It's been a long time since she was injured, and we’re so happy that she has come back and is now in a position to help the team.”

Munich slows down, Dunst speeds up

Dunst has been living in Munich since May and has discovered the city, the Isar river, the Englischer Garten and the peace and quiet for herself. “Munich slows you down,” she once said. And yet, on this evening, she sped everything up: the atmosphere on the bench, the game, the cheers of the spectators. Every movement was a small triumph after months of waiting.

After almost a year out, Dunst marked her return from a lengthy cruciate ligament injury.

When Dunst came on, she made her presence felt immediately. She demanded the ball, gave commands, ran into space, appeared agile and powerful, and exuded that almost invisible calm that only players who have passed their first tests in life possess. The relief, the joy, the pure humanity were still evident after the final whistle. Dunst was hugged, her teammates embraced her. Yes, the whole team was delighted.

Barbara Dunst is back. With a knee named Francesco. With a story that shaped her. With friends, coaches and support staff who carried her through. And with a smile that made the Max-Morlock-Stadion just a little bit brighter that evening.
