The 20-year-old's recent Instagram story has Owls fans hitting the panic button
Sheffield Wednesday have undergone an incredibly difficult summer transfer window, and one which may be taking one more unwanted turn.
Wednesday fans had the recent Instagram story of young star Pierce Charles brought to their attention, as the 20-year-old posted a picture of himself thanking fans after a game.
With the timing of this post coming mere hours away from the transfer window closing, some Owls fans have begun to fear the worst, as their only real remaining asset in terms of picking up a significant transfer fee could be on their way out before 7pm.
However, updates from Joe Crann of the Sheffield Star suggest that the Northern Irishman isn't going anywhere.
Nevertheless, it's induced a stressful end to a difficult window for Sheffield Wednesday fans.
Charles' Instagram story post has caused a lot of stir online from Sheffield Wednesday fans, as they look to unpick the reasoning why the 20-year-old has decided to post an image of him thanking fans a couple of hours before the transfer window slams shut.
Charles, who is currently on the road to recovery after undergoing shoulder surgery in late August, was the subject of some transfer speculation of his own this summer, after breaking into the Sheffield Wednesday squad towards the back end of last season and impressing at the beginning of this term.
Rangers and Strasbourg had shown interest, and Premier League side West Ham United had tabled a £2.2 million bid. However, no move was made, with Alan Nixon claiming that the Owls were holding out for around £8 million.
Things had looked to be quietening down on that front, but Charles' Instagram story has led these Sheffield Wednesday fans' fears to resurface.
Wednesday had already brought Ethan Horvath to the club to cover for the injured Charles, but perhaps this could have also been to ensure that there was still a senior keeper in the ranks if the 20-year-old were to leave.
Fans in the replies shared their concerns, with others claiming that a sale of their most exciting young prospect would be further proof that current owner Dejphon Chansiri isn't interested in the future of Sheffield Wednesday.
However, according to an update from Joe Crann, nothing has been said to suggest that Charles will be departing Hillsborough before the transfer window closes this evening.
He did state that "everything is caveated as always, especially at #swfc," but he expects the Owls to retain the 20-year-old past tonight's deadline.
Ultimately, this summer has been unpredictable for Wednesday fans, as they cling to the remains of their threadbare squad and hope others don't leave. There were always going to be worries about Charles following the likes of Djeidi Gassama and Josh Windass out the door, but they've managed to retain him for the time being.
