Premier League clubs are having a transfer window that breaks all records.

The 2023 summer window saw the 20 PL clubs set a new record spend, a combined £2.36bn on new signings.

With a fortnight to go, this new BBC Sport report (see below) says that already this 2025 summer window has seen spending of £2.26bn by the 20 Premier League clubs.

This current window closes at 7pm on Monday 1 September 2025 and so including today (Tuesday 19 August) that means 14 shopping days remain.

With only around £100m left to spend before a new record is spent, I think fair to say that the current 2023 summer record won’t just be broken, it will be absolutely smashed. We are surely heading up closer to the £3bn mark rather closer to £2bn.

Put it this way, if the 20 Premier League clubs only spend say £20m more each on average these last two weeks of the window, that takes us well beyond £2.6bn.

The new Premier League TV deals have now kicked in this season and that means all 20 PL clubs get a sizeable chunk of money more, mainly due to ever rising income from overseas TV deals.

As this BBC Sport report points out, Premier League clubs are not just collectively outspending the clubs in each of the other major leagues. The 20 Premier League clubs in summer 2025 have so far spent more than all the clubs in La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and Serie A combined!

BBC Sport report on how much Premier League clubs have spent this summer 2025 transfer window – 18 August 2025:

‘With two weeks to go until the Premier League summer transfer window closes, clubs are well on course to spend a record amount on new players.

Premier League clubs have already spent £2.26bn on players since the window opened at the start of June.

That is an increase of 12.7% on the £1.97bn spent during the summer of 2024.

The current record stands at £2.36bn during the 2023 summer transfer window.

With more deals to come and the future of several players unclear as the 1 September deadline nears, it seems certain a new record will be set.
