Sunderland’s push for Europe remains alive despite a 4-3 defeat at Aston Villa, and every league place now carries serious prize-money stakes.
As it stands, seventh delivers a UEFA Conference League berth and sixth leads to the Europa League, with the Black Cats two and four points off those spots and holding a game in hand. If Villa win the Europa League and stay in the top five, sixth would become a Champions League place. According to Sunderland Echo, each position is worth an average of £2.66m in combined UK and international merit payments, excluding commercial and equal-share income.
Based on the current table, 11th would be worth £26.5m to Sunderland, roughly matching recent fees for Nordi Mukiele at £12m, Robin Roefs at £11.5m and Bertrand Traore at £2.5m.
The upside is clear, if they climb to sixth, they would add £13.3m to reach £39.8m, a jump that alone would cover the Mukiele fee with £1.3m to spare.
There is jeopardy too, Newcastle are only four points back in 14th, and finishing there would return £18.6m, £7.9m down on the current projection. At the extremes, leaders Arsenal would take £53.1m, while bottom side Wolves are set to collect £2.6m.
