The regional high court in Valencia said Rafa Mir has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for sexual assault with penetration and a separate offence of causing injuries. The ruling is not final and orders 64,000 euros in compensation.

The court found there was no consent when Mir inserted his fingers into the victim’s vagina. The incident took place in the early hours of 1 September 2024 at Mir’s home, when he was a Valencia player, after meeting the 21-year-old complainant in a city nightclub.

The trial was held on 28 May. Mir had been arrested in September 2024 following the complaint, and the prosecution sought 10 and a half years.

Judges said the complainant’s account met the three standards used to overcome the presumption of innocence, citing credibility, plausibility and consistency.

Mir maintained in court that everything was consensual and that he was shocked by his arrest. He later posted that he disagrees with the verdict, will appeal in the coming days and continues to trust in justice.

Also convicted was footballer Pablo Jara, a friend of Mir present that night, who received two and a half years in prison and a 6,280 euro fine for sexual assault.

Mir is on holiday before rejoining Sevilla, with whom he is under contract until June 2027. He spent last season on loan at Elche, which held but did not trigger an option to buy. Sevilla issued a statement expressing respect for the legal process and condemning sexual violence.
