The debate over the Villarreal-Barcelona La Liga match in Miami continues to spark controversy, with Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos adding his voice to the discussion.

The fixture, scheduled for December 20 at the Hard Rock Stadium, will be a historic first — La Liga’s inaugural regular season match played outside Spain.

While Barcelona and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) see it as an opportunity to expand the league’s global reach, Real Madrid remain firmly opposed.

Ceballos criticises the Miami fixture

Ceballos was spotted by El Chiringuito cameras at the Movistar Arena while attending Real Madrid’s Euroleague basketball match.

When asked about the Miami game, he initially responded with irony: “I was just talking about it with my girlfriend.”

Pressed further, however, he made his stance clear, stating, “It’s clear that La Liga are adulterating.”

The comment reflects the widespread scepticism among Real Madrid officials, who view the idea of moving a league match abroad as unnecessary and disruptive.

Real Madrid argue that La Liga should remain rooted in its traditional home stadiums, respecting fans who have followed the league for decades.

Barcelona backed by RFEF

For Barcelona and the RFEF, the Miami match is seen in a very different light. The move is designed to reward international fans, particularly in America and Asia, who invest heavily to follow La Liga.

RFEF president Rafael Louzan has defended the decision, stating it is “a gesture good for soccer because it promotes La Liga around the world.”

The Miami fixture also represents a chance for Barcelona to showcase their style and brand to a new audience.

Unlike Madrid, who are against such measures, Barcelona are embracing the opportunity to expand their global footprint and engage fans who rarely have the chance to see the team live.
