Sunderland have received an injury lift with forward Nilson Angulo returning to work at the Academy of Light.

According to Sunderland Echo, the 22-year-old sustained a muscle tear in the build-up to the 1-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on March 14, with the initial expectation set at four to six weeks out. He then missed the Tyne-Wear derby win at Newcastle United.

Fresh images on social media show Angulo stepping up his work on the training pitch, raising hopes he could feature again before the end of the campaign. It remains unlikely he will be available for this weekend’s meeting with Tottenham Hotspur at the Stadium of Light.

He had been named in Ecuador’s provisional squad for friendlies against Morocco and the Netherlands, but withdrew to continue his rehabilitation on Wearside during the two-week international break.

Angulo left the national camp alongside midfielder Patrik Mercado before returning to England, and both absences were regarded as significant for the squad.

Signed in January for £17.5m, Angulo’s return to the training pitches offers a timely boost as Sunderland enter the Premier League run-in.
