Sunderland have been handed an injury boost with £17.5m attacker Nilson Angulo pictured back in training at the Academy of Light.
The 22-year-old sustained a muscle tear in the build-up to the 1-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on March 14. As reported by Sunderland Echo, Régis Le Bris initially said the winger could be out for four to six weeks, and he missed the Tyne-Wear derby win at Newcastle United.
Fresh images on social media show Angulo stepping up his recovery on the training pitch, raising hopes he could return before the end of the campaign. It remains unlikely he will be available for this weekend’s clash against Tottenham Hotspur at the Stadium of Light.
Angulo had been named in Ecuador’s provisional squad for friendlies against Morocco and the Netherlands, but was withdrawn to continue his rehabilitation on Wearside during the two-week international break.
He left the national-team camp early alongside midfielder Patrik Mercado before returning to England, with head coach Sebastián Beccacece describing both absences as significant losses. For Sunderland, his presence back on the training pitches is a timely boost as the Premier League run-in approaches following his January arrival.
