Régis Le Bris has been handed a timely lift with £17.5m forward Nilson Angulo pictured back in training at the Academy of Light. During the recent international break, Ecuador head coach Sebastián Beccacece confirmed Angulo had left the national camp early to focus on his recovery.
The 22-year-old sustained a muscle tear in the build-up to Sunderland’s 1-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on March 14. The initial estimate was four to six weeks. He missed the Tyne-Wear derby win at Newcastle United.
Images on social media show Angulo stepping up his work on the grass, raising hope he could return before the end of the campaign. Even so, he is unlikely to be available for this weekend’s meeting with Tottenham Hotspur at the Stadium of Light.
Angulo had been named in Ecuador’s provisional squad for friendlies against Morocco and the Netherlands. He was later withdrawn to continue his rehabilitation on Wearside before returning to England.
Signed for £17.5m in January, the forward’s presence back on the training pitches offers encouragement as Sunderland enter the final stretch of the Premier League season.
