Rodrygo out of World Cup with ACL injury, Endrick could seize Brazil chance | OneFootball

Brazil have been dealt a major blow for this summer's World Cup in the United States, with Rodrygo sidelined for at least seven months after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament and external meniscus in his right knee, ruling him out of the tournament. Real Madrid said in a statement on Tuesday that the 25-year-old forward faces a lengthy lay-off.

This is the first significant setback for Carlo Ancelotti in his bid to deliver Brazil a sixth star in the United States this summer. Although not necessarily a starter, especially if Neymar returns to fitness, Rodrygo was seen by Ancelotti as a key attacking option, capable on both flanks and centrally behind the striker.

Without Rodrygo, Vinicius Junior lacks a left-wing understudy beyond Gabriel Martinelli. The door could therefore open for Endrick.

The Lyon loanee from Real Madrid has been playing regularly and making decisive contributions, even if his profile differs from his former Madrid team-mate. As Endrick builds rhythm week by week, Brazil's attacking pool has thinned.

He is very likely to be called and tested by Ancelotti during the spring window for friendlies against France on 26 March and Croatia on 1 April in the United States. His direct competition is more in the number nine bracket, namely Richarlison, Joao Pedro, Matheus Cunha, Gabriel Jesus, Igor Jesus and Igor Thiago.

Endrick's status at home and prolific spell at Palmeiras could give him an edge if he arrives in top form and confidence for the World Cup. He can also operate on the right, where Raphinha and Estevao feature, an area Rodrygo had covered before his injury.
