What Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim requires more than anything in January is a quality midfielder to bolster his ranks.
Casemiro has played the full 90 minutes only once this season, while Manuel Ugarte’s form has fallen off a cliff. So much so that the Red Devils have lost every game he has started in.
On top of this, Kobbie Mainoo is not seen as a defensive midfielder, which means the 20-time English league champions are short on quality in that position.
Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, and Elliot Anderson are among the club’s top targets heading into the winter window. However, none of them will come cheap.
And given INEOS’ summer splurge, a high-value addition seems unlikely at the start of the new year. That has not pleased Amorim.
As relayed by F365, the Portuguese tactician will be furious if the co-owners cannot land one of the top targets in the middle of the season.
Not strengthening in the middle of the park will only exacerbate the team’s problems.
However, INEOS are not too sure of Amorim’s position and hence, do not want to go all out to back him, especially if he does not last the campaign.
“Ruben Amorim will be furious if Manchester United doesn’t secure an elite midfielder in January according to sources. The pressure is mounting, and doubts are creeping in about whether he can last the season as manager.
“The owners are hesitant to spend big, fearing they might need to bring in a new manager soon. Without a top-tier midfielder, the team’s performance will suffer, and Amorim’s position will become even more precarious.”
Amorim has won a mere 12 Premier League games in the 12 months he has been in charge, and it is clear that he is not getting the best out of the squad at his disposal.
It will be interesting to see what Sir Jim Ratcliffe ultimately decides to do, having already mentioned in the past that he will continue to back the ex-Sporting CP boss irrespective of the results.
