FLW’s Sheffield United fan pundit has commented on Danny Rohl being linked to the Blades hotseat.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Sheffield United have had a dismal start to the new Championship season under Ruben Selles.
The Blades’ 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough ensured it was four defeats from their opening four Championship matches, leaving the Yorkshire outfit slumped at the foot of the table and the only side yet to pick up a point in the second-tier.
Selles was also subject to discontent from the Sheffield United faithful after the result at the Riverside Stadium, leaving question marks surrounding his long-term future.
It’s an unprecedented beginning for a club who were so close to Premier League football last season, and despite well-documented financial issues, were expected to be positioned at the top end of the table this term after keeping hold of some key first-team assets.
But Selles’ methods are clearly not having an immediate impact, and there already appears to be a fragmented relationship between him and the supporters, which will be difficult to repair if results continue to go away from them.
From this, Sheffield United are reportedly considering parting ways with the ex-Hull City boss, with former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl eyed up to switch allegiances in the Steel City and be the replacement after recently departing the Owls.
With this news in mind, FLW’s Sheffield United fan pundit has issued his thoughts on Rohl potentially being the next man in the Blades dugout.
Speaking to Football League World, Sheffield United fan pundit Jimmy (AKA Blades Ramble) has admitted that an appointment of Danny Rohl isn’t in the club’s best interest, and would prefer a more experienced figure to take over, who has previously achieved promotion.
When asked about the Rohl links, Jimmy said: “Danny Rohl’s a really tricky one. It will immediately divide the fanbase, and I'm not so sure that that's what we need at the moment.
"I think we need a name that will undoubtedly unite the fanbase. It doesn't have to be Chris Wilder, but I believe it should be someone more proven. I think it just opens too many what ifs.
"If it's Danny Rohl, I'm not saying he's not a good manager, but has he done that much more than Ruben Selles in terms of his CV and his accomplishments? I'm not sure he has.
“Somebody like Sean Dyche or Steve Cooper, who’ve actually done it and been promoted out of this league, I think that would be more well received.
“The thing is, if we appoint Danny Rohl, the man who we were taunting as ‘Sausage Rohl’ just six months ago, and it doesn't work, it would be horrendous from the blue half of the city, really tough to come to terms with, and I don't think we can afford another failed experiment.”
While Ruben Selles remains in the Sheffield United hotseat for now, targets will be in the process of being shortlisted should he be unable to turn this around, and the next decision of who is boss will be critical to the club getting themselves back into the conversation of promotion.
With Danny Rohl, it does provide yet another big risk. He has a similar pedigree to Selles of managing a team competing at the lower end of the Championship table and doing well, but it remains to be seen whether the 36-year-old would be able to handle the pressure and expectation to get the club back to the top-flight, while any poor start would immediately have supporters on his back given his previous connections to Sheffield Wednesday.
It screams of an appointment that could go the exact same way Selles has gone, risking the club fighting towards the bottom end of the table and being involved in a relegation scrap, something that couldn’t have been foreseen before a ball was kicked for the 2025-26 season.
It would make a lot more sense to consider managers like Sean Dyche and Steve Cooper, as Jimmy noted, who possess previous experience of galvanising teams when they’re at their lowest points and pushing them up the leagues.
Dyche, of course, has won promotion out of the second-tier with Burnley, albeit that being in 2016, but he needs a chance to prove himself again after taking an extended period of time away from coaching following his departure from Everton.
Meanwhile, Cooper has had more recent success in the division, taking Nottingham Forest from the foot of the Championship table all the way to play-off glory in 2022, with the credentials on his CV glowing as he awaits his next challenge.
With the likes of Dyche and Cooper available and raring to go, it does seem puzzling as to why Sheffield United would prefer the gamble of Rohl over proven experience, with the latter exactly what the club needs right now to climb out of the slump they are currently in.
Time will tell whether they will actually go through with appointing Rohl, but if it does get confirmed, it is something that will instantly spark unsettling debate and cause more fractions within the club, at a time when unity must be restored.
