Latest team news:

  • Antonio Nusa and Lukas Klostermann are both an option for the game in Wolfsburg.
  • Xaver Schlager recovery is going steadily, however the midfielder will not be available for selection against VfL.
  • Amadou Haidara completed parts of team training and should be back fully involved with the squad next week. However, he also will not travel to Wolfsburg this weekend.
  • RB Leipzig will be without Kosta Nedeljkovic for several weeks. The 19-year-old defender is dealing with a stress reaction in his right knee, which must be carefully managed and requires several weeks of rest in order to ensure a full recovery.
  • Max Finkgräfe is also set to be sidelined for several weeks. Further medical checks have confirmed that the 21-year-old suffered an injury to the medial collateral ligament in his left knee during training last week. The aim is to have the full-back return to team training following the international break in October.

A successful start to the season:

  1. “Every Bundesliga game is a challenge – you have to be at 100% if you want to win these games. We’ve played well as a team – we’ve been disciplined and clear in doing what we set out to do. It’s important to look after yourself and to drive your own development. We’ve taken a lot of steps in the past few weeks and now it's all about building on that going forward in Wolfsburg. We had another very good week of training and we are looking forward to the match.”

Lessons from Köln:

  1. “The most important thing to take from the Köln game is to look to defend higher throughout the game. It took us a little too long to find our rhythm again after their tactical change. We need to show more balance. At the same time, we managed to create a lot of chances, but we didn’t take advantage of all of them. We need to be more consistent and more effective on the counter attack.”

Wolfsburg’s strengths:

  1. “Wolfsburg have a great mix of experience and talent – they sort of remind me of us. They're strong in transition, dangerous from set pieces, and assured in their positioning. Overall, they're a very disciplined side – typical of teams with a Dutch coach."

Assan in the starting XI:

  1. “The decision will be based on a number of factors: the individual performance, the opponents and the available options. You have to consider things like: Do I start him or bring him off the bench? Are there opposing players against whom he can be particularly effective?? Assan has stood out in training and we knew that he would give us exactly the inspiration we needed against Köln.”

The mood in the team:

  1. “We have clarity – everyone knows where they stand. I was – and still am – very pleased with the level in training. We have a big squad, but having that clear hierarchy and regular line-up helps massively. This, alongside that sense of achievement, creates a good feeling within the team. Slowing down is not an option though: We need to keep that hunger for winning games."

Ridle Baku as a leader

  1. “Ridle is without a doubt one of our leaders. He might not be the loudest, but he glues this team together. He is professional and a great role model – especially for our younger players. Ridle has performed consistently for a long time now. Teams only ever benefit from having players like him around.”
