Sunderland: Bertrand Traoré sidelined for two more weeks
After suffering an injury at the Africa Cup of Nations, Bertrand Traoré is expected to remain out of action until the end of February.
Despite initial reports suggesting he was close to returning this week, Traoré's injury has proven to be more serious than first thought. Following Sunderland's 1-0 defeat to Liverpool, the Black Cats manager was asked about the Burkinabè international's condition.
Regis Le Bris explained: "Bertrand suffered a significant knee injury, and it appears he played the second half of the Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 match for his country, which aggravated the issue further." The Black Cats' boss and his coaching staff are opting to protect their key player.
I don't recall the opponent's name, but when he returned to Sunderland, the diagnosis was clear: he needed to rest and take care of his knee if he wanted to remain stable through the end of the season, and for the sake of his future career as well. So we didn't rush his recovery process and have focused on his care to ensure he returns to the pitch at full strength.
Bertrand Traoré is now expected to miss Sunderland's next four matches.
