Habib Diarra and Chemsdine Talbi were on the scoresheet for the hosts as they remained unbeaten at home this season.

It did not take long for Sunderland to break the deadlock, as Axel Tuanzebe turned the ball into his own net within nine minutes. Brian Brobbey held the ball up well, laid it off to Diarra who initially paused before unleashing a right-footed shot. The AFCON winner’s strike took a big deflection off Tuanzebe and into the back of the net.

Diarra doubled the lead on the half-hour mark, and this time there was no taking the goal from him. Nordi Mukiele squared the ball into the box and despite Florentino’s efforts to intercept, the ball fell to Diarra who thumped home Sunderland’s second of the evening.

Martin Dubravka got two hands to the shot and really should have done better but could not stop Diarra scoring his first goal for the club.

Halfway through the second half, Talbi put the game to bed with a wonder goal from 20 yards out. The Moroccan cut inside from the left wing and curled his strike into the top corner, hitting the crossbar on the way in.

Brobbey led the line for the Black Cats and deserved a goal for his superb performance. He had numerous opportunities to net his sixth goal of the season, but his best chance in the 63rd minute was denied by Dubravka.

There was no love lost for Dubravka, who was booed all night by the home fans. The former Newcastle goalkeeper was shown a yellow card in the second half for squaring up to Trai Hume following a minor coming together. Both players were shown a yellow card for the altercation.

Burnley showed no threat going forward and failed to register a shot on target for the fourth Premier League game this season. The Clarets’ longest winless drought since 1890 continues; they have reached 15 Premier League matches following tonight’s defeat.

The victory means that Sunderland jumped from 11th to eighth, leapfrogging Newcastle, Everton and Fulham. Their next test is away at Arsenal this Saturday, whilst Burnley face West Ham at home in a bottom-of-the-table clash.
