Sunderland’s most valuable XI reveals who would start if selection were set by market worth, with some key men missing out. Figures are from TransferMarkt.
Last summer marked a transformative window after their Championship play-off triumph. A club-record deal made Roma’s Enzo Le Fee a permanent £20m signing following the Wembley win over Sheffield United, then Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra arrived for a reported £30m after interest from Leeds United.
Experience came with former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka and defensive reinforcements Omar Alderete, Nordi Mukiele and Reinildo Mandava. Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs has impressed, while Brian Brobbey has quickly earned cult status with his power and persistence.
The XI by value is Roefs in goal at €25m. A back four of Trai Hume €22m, Dan Ballard €20m, Alderete €15m and Dennis Cirkin €8m.
Midfield features Diarra €32m, Noah Sadiki €30m and Chris Rigg €25m. Chemsdine Talbi €25m and Le Fee €25m operate wide, with Brobbey €25m through the middle.
The overhaul has underpinned an unexpected push for Europe in their first season back in the Premier League. Regis Le Bris said it was probably unexpected to hit 40 points so early, although injuries and fatigue are being felt. He stressed identity, togetherness and hard work, believing such periods can strengthen foundations and create the conditions for better days with a full, fresher squad.
