Toby Collyer: West Brom boss Ryan Mason confirms fresh injury setback for Man United loanee | OneFootball

West Bromwich Albion boss Ryan Mason has confirmed that Manchester United loanee Toby Collyer has suffered a new devastating injury that’s likely to keep him sidelined for weeks.

Collyer’s injury woes

Collyer has made 12 Championship appearances since joining West Brom from United during the summer transfer window, but he just can’t seem to catch a break in terms of nailing down a consistent run of games with the side.

In the early weeks of his loan spell, he had to be content with coming on from the bench and making an impact.

He looked good in his cameos and was finally handed a start in West Brom’s 3-0 loss to Millwall in October. He had to wait until later in the month for another start, this time against Preston North End.

However, his involvement at home vs. Preston was cut short by an injury sustained shortly after the restart.

Collyer was ruled out of action for weeks as he recovered. He only made his return on November 8, featuring in the dying embers of a meeting with Oxford United.

He was afforded more minutes in the subsequent clash against Coventry. This, coupled with Jayson Molumby’s dismissal, paved the way for Collyer to return to the XI against Birmingham City on Wednesday.

However, after a bright start, the Carrington academy graduate pulled up with another injury after just 10 minutes.

After the final whistle, Mason gave an update on Collyer.

Mason issues Collyer fitness update

Mason said [as quoted by the Express and Star], “It’s a muscle injury, yes. I think it’s challenging for him, it’s disappointing.”

“He had a few last season at Man United, that’s why I was very patient with him this season because I wanted to give him the best opportunity to grow into the demands of this league.”

“But for something to happen after 10 minutes, it’s disappointing.”

“It looks like it (a hamstring issue). We’ll assess him in the next couple of days and see where we’re at with that.”

Mason added, “We’ve seen this season – you asked me three or four days ago – do you feel like you’ve got some depth and you’ve got options in there? I’ve been in this game long enough.”

“One of our midfielders gets sent off, so he’s out of this game, and the other midfielder gets injured today. You lose players, but that’s all part of football and that’s why you build a squad. That’s why you’ve got 20 players or so players to rely on and utilise.”

It’s genuinely unlucky for Collyer. His talent is obvious to everyone, yet he just can’t seem to get the opportunity to prove it.
