Todd Boehly says Manchester City’s pursuit of Marc Cucurella shaped Chelsea’s move for the defender. He was acting as interim sporting director after buying the club in May 2022.

He made the comments on Saturday during a round-table, admitting he lacked deep football knowledge and took his cue from City’s interest. According to L'Équipe, he spent the summer in the role with little idea what made a good player and decided that if City wanted Cucurella, he would too.

Boehly completed the transfer from Brighton for around 65 million euros.

He then handed sporting director duties to Paul Winstanley and Laurence Steward at the end of summer 2022, returning to a full-time ownership role.

Since then, the Spaniard has become an undisputed starter for the Blues, winning the Europa Conference League and the Club World Cup.
