Spurs begin life without Cristian Romero after four-game ban

Tottenham have been forced into a defensive reshuffle for their crunch game against Newcastle, with Cristian Romero suspended and Destiny Udogie ruled out for at least a month.

Romero is banned for four games after his red card at Old Trafford at the weekend and Udogie has been sidelined with another hamstring injury.

Kevin Danso is still “weeks away” from a return from a toe injury, so Radu Dragusin could make his first start in over a year.

Djed Spence is fit to return after two games out with a calf injury, in some good news for Spurs ahead what feels like another big game for Thomas Frank.

Udogie limped off after 55 minutes of the 2-0 defeat to Manchester United and Frank says the left-back will miss “four to five weeks”.

Frank said: "We lose two players but we get Spence back and I think Dragusin looked good when he came back in, so I know we will put a very competitive team out tomorrow as well."

On Danso, Frank said: “He met the consultant. It's going forward, but it's still weeks before he's available.”

With Spence and Brazilian left-back Souza fit and available, Frank could opt to revert to a three-man defence after utilising a 4-3-3 against United.

However, with Souza yet to start since signing from Santos for £13million in January, Frank is likely to play Spence at left-back and Archie Gray at right-back.

After the United defeat, Spurs are now just six points from the relegation zone and are still searching for their first league win of 2026.
