The former Liverpool right-back joined Los Blancos in the summer, initially on a free transfer, before Madrid paid a fee to have him available to them for the Club World Cup.

In the maiden new format of the competition, the La Liga outfit were beaten by Paris Saint-Germain 4-0 in New Jersey at the quarter-final stage.

Xabi Alonso has taken over the reins from Carlo Ancelotti at the Bernabeu, and has led the 15-time European champions to second in the Spanish top flight, just one point shy of defending champions Barcelona.

Alexander-Arnold, however, has had a difficult start to life in Spain, struggling to break into Alonso’s starting XI, as well as struggling with injury.

A hamstring problem meant that he missed seven games across La Liga and the Champions League, and he was an unused substitute in the 2-1 El Clasico win.

Now, Madrid have confirmed Alexander-Arnold’s fresh injury, with an official statement reading: "After the tests carried out today, Trent Alexander-Arnold has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the rectus femoris of [his] left quadriceps. Awaiting further developments."

Spanish journalist Arancha Rodriguez detailed that the England international would be sidelined for “two months”.

Alexander-Arnold’s latest injury means that he will miss the club’s Champions League clash with Manchester City next week, as well as the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Atletico Madrid.
