UPN lodge complaint over Athletic shirt map including Navarra | OneFootball

UPN have lodged a complaint with the RFEF’s Competition Committee over Athletic’s new shirt, which carries a map of Euskal Herria with an ikurriña that includes Navarra.

According to as.com, party president Cristina Ibarrola said at a Friday press conference that they are seeking measures to stop the shirt being used in official competition.

She argued the map undermines Navarra’s legal and institutional reality, and pointed to firm rulings by the higher courts of Navarra and the Basque Country that characterise the image as a political matter.

Ibarrola noted that RFEF competition rules bar political logos or messages during official matches, and said football’s high media impact is precisely why kit regulations exist to prevent political messaging. She added that Euskal Herria does not exist as a legal territorial entity.

She stressed the complaint is made with full respect for Athletic supporters and those who feel the club’s colours, who she said are not to blame for the decision. Ibarrola added they will not look away from rule breaches and will exhaust all possible avenues, including the courts.
