Manchester United have certainly made improvements this season.

Last season’s mess

The 2024/2025 season was a disaster of epic proportions as United finished 15th in the league.

It was their worst league finish in the Premier League era as the club struggled to score or stop goals throughout the entire season.

Progress

The club this year clearly still has issues but there has certainly been an overall improvement.

United are in seventh place in the table, but are only one point from fourth and two from third, entering the November international break.

The club has secured impressive victories over Chelsea, Liverpool and Brighton and Hove Albion this season.

What’s more, they have also scored a lot more goals as only Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea have scored more in the league.

Usain Bolt comments

Nonetheless, the improvement has not satisfied everyone and celebrity fan, Usain Bolt, has not been left impressed with one key aspect of Ruben Amorim’s side.

The former Olympics champion was speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents and lambasted the current state of the defence.

Commenting on the issue he explained, “I just watched the United game. One of our biggest problems is when we invite pressure to ourselves.”

He elaborated, “the first goal that they scored against us, Leny Yoro came out, the guy’s [Wilson Odobert] back is turned. Instead of pressing him so he would pass the ball back, he just turned and ran back into defence.”

Bolt continued in an exasperated manner, “they’re always running back. All we do is invite pressure. Please, I’m begging you, man. Please get to the team and say something. You are one of the greatest Manchester United defenders we had. Please, bro. It’s stressing me out. And I know you have nothing to do with this, but tell the guys to pass the ball quicker. They pass the ball like… Oh my God. I’m sorry. I’m venting to you, bro.”

Bolt also claimed that he believes Luke Shaw is the only defender at the club who understands the concept of defending one versus one.

He finished off, “all they know is system, line up and play well. That’s all they know. They don’t know to step up, push the defender a little, pass the ball back down and then you go back into your line.”

While Ferdinand accepted his point he did disagree with the assertion that Matthijs de Ligt was not defending well one on one.

The former United defender explained, “the jumping out defensively, Luke Shaw does it but I think our best one who’s done it this year is [Matthijs] De Ligt. De Ligt has been really good at it, he’s shown the way the manager wants him to do it.”

The United legend also reassured Bolt that the team is in a rebuilding phase and that they will eventually improve but the supporters need to have patience with the side.
