Valencia full-backs make the most of vital international break

Valencia are using the final international break to address their full-back issues and sharpen a push for Europe, with few players away. According to Superdeporte, injuries, tactical reshuffles and struggles on the right for Thierry Rendall and Dimitri Foulquier have shaped the season.

On the left, José Luis Gayà took two heavy blows to the head against Sevilla FC, suffered major swelling and went to hospital. He is being fitted with a protective mask to face Celta de Vigo, and the break is helping reduce inflammation before the Galicians visit Mestalla. Jesús Vázquez is training without problems after impressing at the Sánchez Pizjuán.

On the right there is more to solve. This pause is vital for Thierry Rendall to regain fitness after repeated setbacks and a dip in form tied to those physical issues. He wants to finish stronger, which depends on continuity.

The window could also let Renzo Saravia complete a mini pre-season and reach squad level after months without games, having arrived as a free agent following Foulquier’s injury. He has not debuted yet and hopes this break helps him contribute. Team-mate César Tárrega has described him as an intense trainer.

Whatever Saravia and Thierry’s fitness, Carlos Corberán’s recent set-up could leave that flank role marginal. Unai Núñez has operated between right-back and right centre-back depending on the phase, freeing Luis Rioja and pushing Jesús Vázquez or José Luis Gayà higher, and it has served the team well.
