Vasco have set their sights high in the search for Fernando Diniz’s successor, with Pedrinho and the hierarchy dreaming of Artur Jorge or Marcelo Gallardo.

According to Globo.com, the targets command salaries above what Diniz earned, yet the board believe an impactful appointment is required to lead the team.

Beyond tactics, they want a strong character to control the dressing room and manage players, aiming to jolt the squad and shield it from outside pressure and recent poor results. On Monday the club contacted several candidates, including Renato Gaúcho, while Artur Jorge and Gallardo won unanimous approval from the leadership.

Artur Jorge’s case is trickier, as he is employed by Al-Rayyan in Qatar, with a release clause of about R$ 30 million and a salary above R$ 5 million. He knows he would not earn that in Brazil, having led Botafogo in 2024, so a deal is considered unlikely.

Gallardo’s situation is not straightforward either. On Monday he announced that the match against Banfield next Thursday will be his final game in charge of River Plate. Hired in August 2024, his second stint brought no titles and he failed to secure a Libertadores place for this year, and Vasco’s board do not know if he would want to start another job immediately.

Both appeal for their experience in international and knockout competitions with major clubs on the continent. The hierarchy are assessing financial viability before moving to formal offers, which have not yet been made to either coach.
