Vasco’s hunt for a new coach moved on after a meeting on Monday 24, with Artur Jorge emerging as the board’s consensus target. According to ge, he is the club’s priority.

The Portuguese won the Campeonato Brasileiro and the Libertadores in 2024 with Botafogo. He is seen as the ideal fit and coaches Al-Rayyan in Qatar.

Any move is complex, with a release clause around R$ 30 million and monthly pay above R$ 5 million. The hierarchy want a more vertical game and a stronger defence, traits aligned with Artur Jorge.

Marcelo Gallardo also has unanimous approval from the board led by president Pedrinho. No formal offers have been made, only enquiries to gauge costs and openness to working in Brazil in 2026.

Other options were explored without progress. Leonardo Jardim and Carlos Carvalhal were ruled out after declining interest, while Rafael Guanaes and Martín Demichelis are outside-the-box alternatives with less backing. The aim is to line up a new boss before the clássico with Fluminense on Sunday one.

Renato Gaúcho remains in the background at São Januário. He was contacted early and is open to talks, and as an unemployed Rio de Janeiro resident is a practical fallback, though his salary request surprised the club.

Vasco are trying to lure Artur Jorge with their sporting project and the chance to return to domestic competitiveness after his recent success. Early contacts were described as reasonable, suggesting room on wages, and discussions are expected to intensify in the coming hours.
