Robert Sanchez got his place in goal back for today’s game, but he’s already made a big mistake which could cost him long term.

We were very surprised to see Robert Sanchez dropped for the Aston Villa game in midweek.

He had been poor against Arsenal in the preceding game, but it was still just one bad game after a long period of positive contributions.

Filip Jorgensen came in and did well, and we were expecting him to play tonight. But instead, Rosenior wrong footed us against and brought Sanchez back in. If this was a chance for the Spaniard to earn his Premier League place back, he’s blown it.

While his mistake wasn’t as blatant as some of his past gaffes on the ball, it was an equally bad piece of goalkeeping. A simple punt up the pitch went over the heads of our defenders, and as the camera panned we were all expecting to see Sanchez there to sweep it up.

But he didn’t appear on the screen – his starting position was far too deep and he was backing up rather than advancing. He was in total no man’s land, and Sam Smith was able to just place the ball past him. If Rosenior wasn’t sure about his skills on the ball, he’ll now be worried about this part of his game too.

Sanchez set to hand gloves back to Jorgensen

Robert Sanchez is far too deep to deal with a long Wrexham punt.

Whatever happens with our lineup for the next game, it looks like the battle between Sanchez and Jorgensen is going to continue for the rest of the season, the second year in a row where there have been doubts and a mid-season dropping.

We hope our sporting directors are finally going to get the message – we reason we see each of our managers going back and forth between the keepers is not because they’re both great, it’s because they’re both not good enough.
