Walsall assistant Terry Connor will take a short break from his duties, with Michael Johnson drafted in on a temporary basis. The club said in a statement that Connor would be away for a short period before returning, and that Johnson links up with the staff with immediate effect.

Connor, 61, replaced Gary Waddock as assistant head coach last month after Waddock left to become Wealdstone manager in the National League. He had previously served as interim assistant at Bescot while Waddock underwent ankle surgery earlier this season.

Johnson will be in the dugout alongside interim head coach Darren Byfield when Walsall host Gillingham on Good Friday.

Johnson made 262 appearances across eight years for Birmingham City, scoring 12 goals and reaching the League Cup final in 2001. He also played for Derby County, Notts County and Sheffield Wednesday, and earned 13 caps for Jamaica.

The 52-year-old later managed Guyana, took caretaker charge of Notts County in 2009 and spent several seasons as their youth coach. More recently he has worked with Cardiff City under-21s and with the FA in the English youth set-up. He and Byfield were team-mates at international level.
