Walsall face a pivotal summer after a 4-0 home defeat by Cheltenham all but ended faint play-off hopes. Restructure and recruitment now top the agenda for the club and Trivela.
ExpressAndStar.com reports Walsall plan to hire a head of football first, then a successor to Mat Sadler. Interim Darren Byfield stays to season’s end, but losses to Swindon and Cheltenham have likely hurt his case unless a remarkable late turnaround arrives.
There are 17 players not contracted beyond the summer, including six loanees, with another 11 out of contract. Last season’s released and retained deadline for non play-off clubs was two weeks after the regular campaign, and no 2025-26 date is set, which could leave a tight turnaround, especially if a new head coach is installed.
Pressure is mounting on Trivela after four problem January windows and stalled incremental progress, with an eighth straight year in the EFL’s basement division looming. Summer recruitment under Sadler had been a strength via smart loans and non-league finds, yet uncertainty now breeds concern.
The incoming head of football will lead day-to-day football operations across first team, academy, medical, performance, recruitment and analysis, and must align with the head coach. Trivela bought the Bescot freehold and refurbished The Locker to grow revenue.
The market remains challenging and overspending is not on Trivela’s agenda. Priority is to appoint the head of football and the head coach, then make ruthless calls on contracts. Brandon Comley has been a rare bright spot, and another overhaul looks likely.
