Walsall face a pivotal summer after a 4-0 home defeat by Cheltenham Town all but ended faint play-off hopes, turning attention to club restructure and recruitment under Trivela.
ExpressAndStar.com notes there are three games left, with work under way to appoint a head of football before naming Mat Sadler’s successor. Interim Darren Byfield’s back-to-back losses to Swindon and Cheltenham have badly hurt his chances unless results change dramatically.
Seventeen players are not contracted beyond the summer, including loanees Myles Roberts, Kacper Lopata, Jid Okeke, Rico Richards, Daniel Kanu and Aaron Loupalo-Bi. Of the 11 out of contract, notable names include Aden Flint, Brandon Comley, Alfie Chang and Albert Adomah.
Last term, non-play-off clubs had a fortnight after the regular season to submit retained lists. The EFL have yet to confirm the 2025-26 date, and a similar window would leave a tight turnaround, particularly if a new head coach is calling the shots.
January recruitment has stumbled across four winter windows under Trivela and talk of incremental progress has stalled as an eighth straight year in the EFL’s basement looms. Summer business under Sadler, from smart loans to non-league finds, owed much to pre-planning.
The incoming head of football must be aligned with the head coach and drive strategy and day-to-day leadership across first team, academy, medical and performance, recruitment and analysis. Walsall are navigating a tough market, with £8.226 million revenue in 2024-25 and a £1.968 million loss, and appear unwilling to overspend. Once leadership is set, ruthless calls await and another overhaul looks likely, with Comley a rare bright spot.
