Walsall's summer checklist: Restructure, new head coach and ruthless calls

Walsall’s 4-0 home loss to Cheltenham has all but killed faint play-off hopes, turning attention to a pivotal summer. Three games remain, but structure and personnel decisions dominate.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, a head of football is being recruited, then a successor to Mat Sadler. In charge to season end, Darren Byfield’s back-to-back defeats to Swindon and Cheltenham seem to have damaged his chances without a late surge.

Seventeen players are not contracted beyond summer, including six loanees. Among 11 out-of-contract players are Priestley Farquharson, Aden Flint, Charlie Lakin and Albert Adomah. Last term, non-play-off clubs had two weeks after the season to file retained lists, and with 2025-26 dates unconfirmed, a similar window would be tight.

Trivela face growing scrutiny. January recruitment has misfired across four winter windows and incremental progress has cooled, with an eighth year in the fourth tier looming. Sadler’s summer work yielded smart loans and non-league finds, but uncertainty breeds anxiety.

The head of football must be aligned with the next head coach. The role will drive football strategy and lead first team and academy, plus medical, performance, recruitment and analysis.

The market is tough against spenders such as MK Dons and Salford City. Walsall’s 2024-25 revenue was £8.226 million, third highest in the fourth tier, with a £1.968 million net loss below Port Vale, Fleetwood, Gillingham, Carlisle and Salford.

Key appointments must come first, then ruthless retained calls. Brandon Comley has stood out, and an overhaul looks likely.
