Chelsea’s struggles in goal are now into their third season, incredible.

Most fans were puzzled by the decision to sign Robert Sanchez in the first place, and some even thought he was coming in to be a backup.

But since then he’s played consistently, and got Chelsea in trouble many times, with the most recent example coming last weekend with a red card against Manchester United.

Mikel loses it over Chelsea’s goalkeeper policy

On his podcast today, Jon Obi Mikel was furious about how Chelsea had fumbled around for another summer without sorting out their biggest issue.

“It’s gonna be incredibly hard for us to win the Premier League with the goalkeeper we have,” Mikel said.

“We can’t wait. We want to win now. We want to win yesterday. The Premier League. We can’t wait to sign Mike Maignan next season. No. Every season is a season where we have to think about winning the league. Every top club has got [a good goalkeeper].

“Pep Guardiola noticed that – Ederson has been absolutely fantastic for Man City – but Pep noticed he wasn’t the same goalkeeper [and replaced him]. Pep has to think about the club, the success of the club, of the team. How can the team get back to winning ways.”

Sunk cost Sanchez has to go

The briefings that have consistently come out of Chelsea claim that the club back Sanchez to become a top keeper. Year after year, that gets harder to believe.

We also think that the determination to stick with Sanchez has a lot of ego involved. The people who brought him to the club don’t want to admit defeat, and the sunk cost fallacy is seeing them sink further and further into trouble.

But they see the same things we do, and they can’t go on like this forever.
