Leicester City have the threat of a points deduction hanging over them ahead of their Championship opener against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

Leicester City have ‘no indication’ about when they will find out if they are hit with a points deduction for allegedly breaching PSR rules.

It’s no secret that the Foxes have been in a battle with the authorities over the past few years due to issues with their finances.

It was expected that Leicester would be deducted points last season, but they managed to avoid a penalty after winning on appeal, which related to an alleged breach in the 2022/23 season.

Sadly for Leicester, that made no difference, as they still ended up suffering relegation from the Premier League, and it was stated back in May that the EFL were charging the club for allegedly breaching their rules.

This has been hanging over the club since, and with the new Championship season a matter of days away, it appears Leicester will be heading into the campaign with more uncertainty.

That’s after Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett revealed that there is ‘no indication’ of when a decision will come, and he explains that Marti Cifuentes will have to lead the team, knowing they could be docked up to nine points at any time.

He does add that this is common in situations like this, so there’s nothing that the Championship side can do, meaning they will just have to wait until it plays out.

It’s quite sad to say this in the modern game, but the reality is that Leicester will be used to this by now, as they have had issues with PSR for the past few years. It was a similar story last season with a points deduction possible, but the club won that appeal.

From a football perspective, perhaps the most important aspect of this is that Leicester don’t know when this will happen, so it’s completely out of their control.

Therefore, Cifuentes won’t allow this to become a distraction, and he will be reiterating that all the squad can do is focus on winning football games.

As well as that, he may use it as motivation, as the threat of a points deduction means that Leicester can’t afford to start slowly if they want to be in the mix for promotion next May.

But, the only focus right now will be on trying to beat Sheffield Wednesday, and whilst it looks like the ideal start on paper due to the Owls’ issues, Cifuentes and Leicester can’t get complacent.
