Following the 0-0 at St. Mary's back in September, it means neither team won a game this season. However, yesterday's fixture in Portsmouth was far more eventful than the reverse.

After a disappointing first half, it was Leo Scienza to open the scoring on the break for the Saints. On 57 minutes, Finn Azaz found the Brazilian who worked his way into the box to score his fifth goal for the club.

It looked as though Tonda Eckert's side would take the bragging rights back across Hampshire. But Pompey new-boy Ebou Adams endeared himself to the home faithful by scoring on 77 minutes to equalise.

After the chaos of a corner, Adams managed to knock the ball in from mere yards out. Neither side could muster up a winner after that, with the pair seemingly content to take a point from the game.

Matt Le Tissier criticises Sky's coverage of Portsmouth 1-1 Southampton

Matt Le Tissier is the only player to have won the Southampton Player of the Season award three times. The legendary figure is the second-highest all-time goalscorer and fourth-highest appearance-maker for the club.

He faced Pompey a few times at Southampton, but failed to score a single goal. However, the legendary Sky Sports pundit was still hoping his former club would take home the bragging rights at Fratton Park.

Speaking on X, formerly Twitter, Le Tissier explained his feelings on the lack of coverage of the game from his former employers. He was also quick to tease Portsmouth on the full-time whistle.

He wrote: "So 0-0 at our place and 1-1 at theirs so that means we win on away goals 👍🏻😂"

Southampton and Portsmouth's 2025/26 outlook

Given that Southampton are seven points off the play-off places, and with Portsmouth just one point above Blackburn Rovers and three above Oxford United, it could be argued that a point does very little for either side.

Both teams are in need of wins to push themselves further up the table and to the sort of position which is more befitting of their early season ambitions. That being said, most supporters of both teams would perhaps be keen to see a rematch given the two draws this term.

Southampton need to win the games around them and face Stoke City next, while Portsmouth host West Bromwich Albion. They both play teams who are in close proximity in the league table, with points vital in such games.

Le Tissier may well tease Portsmouth fans, but there is still every chance of a repeat of a fixture that has scarcely been seen since the turn of the century, and one which would be welcomed by neutrals in 2026/27.
