Wolves are targeting a summer move for Dan Neil, ExpressAndStar.com understands.

The 24-year-old is on loan at Ipswich from Sunderland and is set to become a free agent when his Black Cats deal expires. Sunderland have already confirmed he will depart at the end of his loan.

Following the drop to the Championship, Wolves face a summer rebuild and their midfield needs reinforcing, with Brazilian pair Joao Gomes and Andre expected to draw interest from elsewhere. Neil’s age and promotion pedigree make him an appealing free option.

Wolves will also assess Tommy Doyle in the summer, with the midfielder expected to return after a loan at Birmingham.

Neil rose through Sunderland’s academy and captained last season’s promotion to the Premier League. He featured only three times in the top flight before a January move to Ipswich, having already amassed 201 senior games for Sunderland.

Since moving to Portman Road he has made 15 appearances in all competitions. Ipswich are second in the Championship, holding the final automatic place on goal difference ahead of Millwall with a game in hand.

As his 18-year association with Sunderland ends, Neil thanked coaches, team-mates, staff and supporters, said he was proud to help win promotion and called captaining the club a boyhood dream. He added that, as a lifelong fan, he is excited for whatever comes next.
