Mateo Cassierra is expected to leave Belenenses in this transfer window after holding successful talks with West Bromwich Albion, O Jogo revealed.
The Colombian looks set to be one of the Baggies’ final additions before the 31st August, adding some much needed competition for places up front with Callum Robinson.
U23 players Rayhaan Tulloch and Quevin De Castro are likely to fall down the pecking order as a result of his potential arrival, should the adjustment process from Liga Portugal be a smooth one.
West Brom are level on points with Fulham and Stoke City as the second tier’s leading trio after four matches, with the two newly relegated sides looking to establish themselves as front runners in this campaign.
The 6ft 1in striker hit double figures last term as Belenenses finished tenth, at 24 Valerien Ismael will be confident he can quickly develop the player to contribute heavily in his side’s promotion push.
Here, then, we look at two knock-on effects Cassierra’s potential arrival could have on West Brom…
Loan outgoings
The added depth may provide the opportunity for one of Tulloch or De Castro, more likely the latter, to go out on loan and get some regular first team experience. Tulloch came off the bench in the Baggies 2-1 win at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday and spent time at Doncaster Rovers on loan last season, compared to De Castro who is yet to make his first appearance in senior football.
Ismael will be keen to keep some youthful exuberance around the squad, but it looks unlikely that both players will be required on the depth chart should Cassierra step in before the window shuts.
Broaden Robinson’s horizons
Callum Robinson is a versatile threat at second tier level, able to operate in any position in a front four and often as capable at creating chances as he is getting on the end of them. His services could be utilised in wide areas should Cassierra come in to play centrally, with Grady Diangana’s up and down fitness record in recent years, Robinson would be a useful option to provide width.
An aerial bombardment was the undoing of Sheffield United as they went down 4-0 at the Hawthorns last time out at home, Cassierra’s services could give Ismael a greater alternative style of play and point of difference if teams begin to work him out in just his second season in a Championship dugout.
With Robinson adding to the creative contingent it increases the types of threat on Ismael’s West Brom Swiss army knife.
