We looked at some of the potential departures that could take place at Sheffield Wednesday in 2025.
It has been an excellent first half of the season for Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship, but manager Danny Rohl will feel there is still plenty of work to do on his squad.
After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, Wednesday have made clear progress under Rohl this campaign, and they currently sit 10th in the table, just three points from the play-off places.
With the Owls now facing a two-week break from Championship action due to the FA Cup, they will no doubt be hoping to use the time productively in the transfer market, and there has already been one departure this month, with midfielder Sean Fusire making a loan move to League Two side Carlisle United.
Another player who could be heading out the exit door over the coming weeks is Callum Paterson, who has found his game time incredibly limited this season.
Paterson joined Wednesday from Cardiff City in September 2020, and he has played in a host of positions for the club over the past four-and-a-half years, including right-back, centre-back, central midfield and up front.
He has made just a handful of substitute appearances this season though, despite the fact that Rohl opted to trigger a one-year extension option in his contract in the summer.
It was claimed in August that the Owls were open to allowing Paterson to leave if they received a suitable offer, and that stance will likely remain the same this month, but even if the Scot fails to secure a move in January, he will almost certainly be released when his deal expires at the end of the season.
Paterson is not the only Wednesday player currently facing an uncertain future, and we looked at two other names that could be set to depart Hillsborough in 2025.
Striker Michael Smith played a crucial role in Wednesday's promotion from League One after joining the club from Rotherham United in the summer of 2022, but he found himself out of favour in the Championship last season.
After Smith scored just four goals in 34 games last season, it seemed inevitable that he would depart in the summer, particularly amid interest from Wrexham, but a move did not materialise.
Given the struggles of the likes of Ike Ugbo and Jamal Lowe, Rohl will certainly be relieved that Smith stayed at the club, and the 33-year-old has played a far bigger part this season than many had expected.
Smith has already beaten his goal tally from the whole of last season, but regular starts are still few and far between for the striker, and with his contract set to run out in the summer, his time at Hillsborough could be coming to an end.
Unless the Owls can bring in a new striker in January, Smith is unlikely to be sold this month, but like Paterson, it is difficult to see his deal being extended beyond the summer.
Striker Charlie McNeill arrived at Wednesday on a free transfer in July following his release by Manchester United, and the club reportedly fought off competition from Lazio, Torino, LA Galaxy and Toronto to land his signature.
McNeill enjoyed a prolific spell at youth level for the Red Devils, but disappointing loan stints in the EFL at Newport County and Stevenage suggested that he may not be quite ready for first-team football just yet.
The 21-year-old scored twice on his debut for the Owls in the 2-1 win at Hull City in the EFL Cup in August, but that has not been enough for him to force his way into contention in the league, and Rohl confirmed last month that he was considering sending the striker out on loan.
Since those comments, McNeill has made a couple of substitute appearances for Wednesday in the Championship, but he needs to be playing regular football at this stage of his career, and a loan move in January could be hugely beneficial for the youngster.
