3 managers Peterborough United should consider to replace Luke Williams, following his sacking.

Luke Williams became the second managerial casualty in League One this season, after he was sacked by Peterborough United following a 2-0 home defeat to Doncaster Rovers.

It's been a miserable start to the new campaign for Posh, as they sit 23rd in the table, above just Wigan Athletic, with one win, two draws and four defeats in their opening seven games.

The pressure was on when winless Doncaster Rovers came to town on Saturday, but it would be a day to forget for Williams and Peterborough, as they were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Grant McCann's side.

Footage emerged after the match of home fans chanting, "You're getting sacked in the morning," to their own team's boss, who wouldn't even make it to the morning with his job intact, as the club confirmed his sacking after the final whistle.

Peterborough will now be in the hunt for a second new manager in as many years, so we decided to look at three potential candidates to fill the vacancy at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Williams became the second sacking in League One this season, behind only Michael Duff, who was sacked by Wycombe Wanderers at the start of September after failing to win any of his opening five league matches.

Duff preceded Williams at Swansea City, before going on to manage Huddersfield Town, where he was sacked before joining the Chairboys in September last year, steadying the ship after a difficult few months under the stewardship of Mike Dodds.

This type of manager is exactly what Peterborough will be looking for with their next appointment. A hard-working, well-organised, experienced head who is capable of coming into a difficult situation and getting results straight away.

Whilst Duff's last three jobs have all ended in sackings less than a year after he took charge, he has plenty of experience at League One level, and knows how to hit the ground running with a struggling squad.

The former Burnley defender will also be looking to get his career back on track after a rough few years in the dugout, and Peterborough might be the perfect long-term rebuild job for him.

Of course, we've seen what Duff is capable of during his time at both Cheltenham Town and Barnsley, so if he can steady the ship and build his squad, the sky is the limit for this particular partnership.

Another former Swansea manager, Alan Sheehan, was Williams' successor at the Welsh club, and he has been out of work since his sacking in November 2025.

The former Luton Town defender racked up over 400 career appearances for a multitude of different clubs, and was a highly-rated coach at Swansea, but it seems we're yet to see the best of his abilities in the dugout.

Since his sacking by the Swans last November, Sheehan hasn't even been linked with many jobs, making him somewhat of a forgotten man, but the Posh job could be one that would fit him perfectly.

Peterborough's transfer model involves buying young players from non-league and developing them into EFL standard players, which could be aided by Sheehan's possession-based style of play, which younger players often thrive in.

The Irishman is still young for a manager too, at just 40 years old, so he's someone who could grow with the club and be the spearhead of what's clearly a long-term project.

It would be a risky appointment, given the lack of managerial experience and the dire situation the club find themselves in, but if he can keep them in League One, develop their players, and get them playing some good football, it would be a risk worth taking.

Karl Robinson

Karl Robinson's sacking from Salford City in the summer came as a surprise, after he narrowly missed out on promotion with the Ammies, as they fell to defeat in the League Two play-off final.

Since then, the 46-year-old has been loosely linked with the Wycombe job via social media speculation after he was spotted attending one of their recent games, but nothing concrete has come about regarding his future.

Similarly to Duff, Robinson has plenty of League One pedigree, thanks to his time with MK Dons, Charlton Athletic, and Oxford United, all of which he enjoyed solid spells with.

His win percentage across his career stands at 41.47%, which is incredibly strong given he's amassed well over 800 games in the dugout in his 16-year managerial career thus far.

Robinson would be a good fit for Peterborough, as he would represent an assured head who knows the division well, and how to hit the ground running.

He will also likely have a point to prove after his harsh sacking from Salford, so a move for an experienced and hungry manager would be a smart move by the Posh board.
