50 años del debut de Kempes, Valencia’s Matador marks 50 years since debut | OneFootball

According to AS, today marks 50 years since Mario Alberto Kempes first pulled on Valencia’s black and white, beginning a seven-season stay at Mestalla.

The Argentine made his bow in the 1976 Trofeo Naranja, the tournament’s fourth edition, against CSKA Moscow. Valencia lost on penalties, yet the night announced El Matador to his new crowd.

Kempes has said Valencia signed him after reading clippings from El Gráfico, and he quickly won over the club’s supporters.

In 1978 he was a world champion with Argentina and the World Cup’s top scorer.

He went on to play 246 official games for Valencia, scoring 149 goals and winning three trophies, the 1979 Copa del Rey, the 1979-80 Cup Winners’ Cup and the 1980-81 European Super Cup. To mark the anniversary of his signing, he plans to return to the city on the weekend of 25-26 September, with several events arranged to recall his arrival and debut.
