Javier Aguirre’s honours as he takes charge at Valencia | OneFootball

Javier Aguirre has officially begun his tenure at Valencia and says he is optimistic about the work ahead at Mestalla. The 67-year-old arrives with a well-travelled CV dating back to his 1996 start with Atlante.

According to Superdeporte, he has led Mexico in three spells and took part in the 2002, 2010 and 2026 World Cups, each time reaching the last 16. That has been the team’s ceiling since hosting in 1986, when they reached the quarter-finals.

After his first stint with Mexico, Aguirre moved to Osasuna, earning UEFA Cup qualification, then to Atlético Madrid, guiding them into the Champions League. He later returned to manage Mexico.

Zaragoza stayed up in 2010-11 before his dismissal months later. He then left Espanyol after two survivals, coached Japan and Al-Wahda, and returned to Spain with Leganés, who were relegated in 2020. Subsequent spells came at Monterrey and Mallorca, before a third Mexico stint at the recent World Cup, where England, eventual semi-finalists, knocked them out.

His honours include Liga MX with Pachuca in 1999, the League Cup and two President’s Cups with Al-Wahda in 2016 and 2017, and the CONCACAF Champions League with Monterrey in 2021. With Mexico he won the Gold Cup in 2009 and 2025 and the Nations League in 2025, was Copa América runner-up in 2001, and was named his country’s Coach of the Year in 1999. He also finished Copa del Rey runner-up with Osasuna in 2005 and Mallorca in 2024.
