Aaron Ramsdale’s slide from Arsenal’s first-choice to Southampton reserve has continued, with Tonda Eckert persisting with Daniel Peretz. The five-time England international kept 14 Premier League clean sheets for Mikel Arteta’s side in 2022/23.

The Daily Mail reports that Leeds United had Ramsdale on their shortlist and were ready to move if their bid for James Trafford fell through. A return to Bournemouth, where he lives and played from 2017 to 2020, was also explored but never progressed.

Interest from abroad, including Serie A side Como who are in the Champions League this season, was turned down as he chose to remain on the South Coast after becoming a father.

Eckert has consistently backed Peretz and, if required, would consider parachuting Ramsdale, the club’s number 32, into the first-team picture. He is regarded as supportive behind the scenes.

Remarkably, Ramsdale has only two Championship appearances to his name, though one produced a clean sheet. For now, meaningful minutes look most likely with the U21s while Peretz remains first choice, though circumstances could change quickly.
