The World Cup group qualifier played in the early hours of Friday morning.

Brazil running out 3-0 winners in their penultimate group game, number 17 of 18.

Estevao gave Brazil a 38th minute lead, then two goals only four minutes apart in the second half, gave the final scoreline a more realistic look.

Paqueta scoring on 72 minutes and then his big mate Bruno Guimaraes completing the scoring on 76 minutes.

Sports Dunia reporting on the game and making the Newcastle United star their clear man of the match with a 9 out of 10 rating:

‘Bruno Guimaraes – 9.0:

An absolutely masterful performance. He was the undisputed Man of the Match and the highest rated player. He was everywhere, dictating the tempo, creating an incredible five key passes, and capping it all off with a goal. His vision and technical quality were on a different level tonight.’

Meanwhile, Sportstar reporting on the Bruno Guimaraes goal:

‘Bruno Guimaraes scores!! Lovely movement from Brazil!!

Henrique gets the ball outside the box and plays it into the area for Guimaraes, who gives it back. Henrique goes for the shot himself, and the attempt is pushed onto the bar by the goalkeeper. However, the ball falls right to Guimaraes, who has an empty net to put the ball into.’

Joelinton wasn’t playing, or amongst the subs, so whilst I didn’t see anything reported, my assumption is that he hasn’t made the trip. Joelinton missed the Leeds match due to injury but Eddie Howe said that he hopes to have him back for Wolves on Saturday 13 October. So it looks like he has been left back in Newcastle to make sure he is ok for that game, plus Brazil had already qualified for the World Cup finals next summer.

An often chaotic qualifying campaign which saw Brazil lose their manager and Carlos Ancelotti appointed earlier this year, has ended up recovering to a position where Brazil are guaranteed to finish runners-up if winning their final game.

The top six in the table have already qualified, including Miggy Almiron with Paraguay. However, the play-off spot is still to play for to potentially qualify if you finish seventh in the table after the final round of matches next midweek.

It is between Venezuela and Bolivia for that last spot and in the early hours of Wednesday morning (UK time), Brazil are away to Bolivia in what is sure to be a feisty encounter with the hosts still having a choice of qualifying. I wouldn’t mind it if Bruno is rested for that one! Especially as the Wolves match is only three days later.

This is the September 2025 international schedule for Newcastle United players:

Friday 5 September

Brazil 3 Chile 0

Bruno Guimaraes putting in a top class performance in this dominant World Cup group qualifier victory. Topping it off by scoring the third and final goal, Bruno rated man of the match. Joelinton not named in the matchday squad and it appears he has stayed in Newcastle to make sure he comes back from injury against Wolves in eight days time.
